We have all seen examples of poor design: the brochure at our doctor’s office that was created in MS Word, the website that your 12-year-old nephew did for his neighbour, the person who thought they could design their own company logo to save a few hundred dollars.
With so many examples of poor design around us, why do people still think they can do graphic design themselves? We wouldn’t think of filling our own cavities instead of seeing a dentist, but for some reason, poor design has been accepted time and time again.
Here are a few case studies to consider, and why hiring a professional graphic designer would be worthwhile.
Case 1: You have just started a new business.
Congratulations on your new business endeavor! Now is your chance to make a great first impression on your target market. But, how can you make a good first impression when you are just getting your feet wet with the new business? It is easier than you think. ‘Looking’ professional goes a long way to making you more confident around potential clients. It also helps convince clients that you know your stuff. You would not show up to meet a new lead in your track pants, so why hand them a business card you printed off your home computer with a website that your twelve-year-old neighbour helped you design? Remember, first impressions are important. A professional graphic designer can design a logo, brochure, business card and website to help you stand out from your competition. You may not have the years of experience your competitors have, but with the right attitude and marketing materials to back you up, you are ready for success!
Case 2: Your company needs an image facelift.
Is that website you had designed in 1998 getting you down? Are you envious of your competitors’ business cards? Do you wish your business stood out for all the ‘right’ reasons? Congratulations. Accepting that changes are needed is the first step to your company’s image facelift.
Now that your business is more established you no longer need to cut corners to save a few dollars. (You know, the ones you realize you should not have cut in the first place!) Hiring a professional graphic designer can save you time, headaches, and give your business the lift it needs to remain competitive in today’s saturated market. Something as simple as the font you use can make the difference between marketing pieces that look ‘homemade’ and those that look professional. Shop around, and find a professional graphic designer whose style you like, who has worked for clients with your needs and who has a portfolio to back themselves up. It is always worth investing in your business’ image.
